When Buddha met the Demons of Lanka

This time around, I examine the manner in which Buddha first came to Sri Lanka and encountered the non-Aryan Tamilian inhabitants. Called demons in Dharmapala’s description of them in 1908, they were according to the Dipavamsa, Lanka’s first inhabitants.

My article explores, according to the ancient texts, how the Buddha overcame the Demons. The manner in which he did so, that I explore in my article, is justified in the ancient texts by the fact that the Demons were impervious to the Truth and the Dhamma, and that accordingly, they posed a threat to the Buddha Sasana.

My article was written after listening to the President’s comments on television recently, that Sri Lanka was a country that had witnessed the visitation of the Buddha. Through my article, I explore the possible reasons as to why he said this, and why now.

My reasoning leads me to the conclusion that the historical anchors of the President’s Chintanaya, as brought out by statements such as the above, constitute a thinly veiled justification for any measures necessary, including that which is extra-judiciary and violent, to preserve what he and his government thinks is the Truth.

I will explore this issue further in future submissions, but for now, read my article here. My article is in Sinhala.

According to the ground situation regarding to the HR in Sri Lanka, we can expect what you mentioned in your article.Hiding behind the History and the Buddhism, some consultants (there are massive number of consultants) to the supreme power may suggest to chase away “demons” from this land. But the problem is to find a “Giri Divina”.

Excellent article – glad you are writing again. The government has demons of its own, and I wonder to what end they will employ them in the service of promoting the Chintanaya.

Ravi C, what did you mean by that last sentence? What is a Giri Divina?

Dear Tyrrol,
When we refer legends on Lord Buddha’s visit to Sri Lanka it says that he created an island and chased away demons to that island called Giri Divaina.Even today, when local witch doctors want to call demons ,they call them from Giri Divaina. In other hand we can assume that even the Lord Buddha has recognized the teritorial integrity for demons.

How did the Buddha travel from Nepal across the vast subcontinent of India, cross the Palk Strait and come to Sri lanka? There were no means of transportation,no roads, no sea going vessels at that time. Some say that he came to sri lanka many times. Can anyone explain.
