On Dodawatta and Rajpal FMM issued two press releases stating the same facts, government did not contradict them or give any reasons for their removal. Dukgannarala and Narada was removed while they were doing the programme, and has not been allowed to SLRC after that, these are facts. There were no other reasons given bythe government.

The point I wanted to raise was editorial independence of state controlled media. That is the issue we should be debating.

Quote: Editor of Dinamina was removed from his post because he got the President birthday wrong. Rajpal Abeynaike from the Sunday Observer was removed from his post for his criticism of the President. The Editor of Subasetha, a newspaper on astrology published by the Government owned Lake House, was removed because of the publication of a report that claimed the President was facing an inopportune time. Narada Bakmeewewa and Wasantha Dukgannarala were removed, along with their programme, from State television because they sported long-hair in a programme telecast from the President’s hometown. Bandula Padmakumara was appointed Chairperson of Lake House because the President publicly stated that he was a personal friend.

On what basis you make these allegations? Do you have hard enough facts to say these are the real reasons for these dismissals?

“Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it”

“All propaganda has to be popular and has to accommodate itself to the comprehension of the least intelligent of those whom it seeks to reach.”

“How fortunate for leaders that men do not think.”

“The victor will never be asked if he told the truth.”

“Through clever and constant application of propaganda, people can be made to see paradise as hell, and also the other way round, to consider the most wretched sort of life as paradise.”

“The art of leadership. . . consists in consolidating the attention of the people against a single adversary and taking care that nothing will split up that attention. . . .”

“I use emotion for the many and reserve reason for the few”

The quotes given above are attributed to Adolf Hitler. I personally feel that these quotes are evocative of how the present leadership is running Sri Lanka today.
