Another face of corruption - The breakdown of the medical profession

My article deals with the decrepit condition of the medical profession in Sri Lanka today. Notwithstanding the dedication of some in the profession, the overwhelming perception is that the profession is reaked in corruption and malpractice. I include in my article several anecdotes I heard recently regarding the levels of corruption amongst doctors. There are strong rumours that those who have stood up against the corruption have been killed.

Corruption, in sunny (although we are being battered by the SW Monsoon right now) Sri Lanka has seeped to its lowest ebb and has soaked into every single fabric of society, no doubt.

The educational and medicsal professions were the most honored and respected ones since time immemorial. Things have changed, sadly. Its the evil that stems from the top.

Our only hope is to get rid of the men and women at the top if we want to be anything decent in the ensuing years. God help us!

This face of corruption is sometimes closely connected to the other: typically when false medical problems and certificates are concocted to keep corrupt dealers and politicians out of prison when they are being tried or found guilty by the law.

It doesn’t take much to remember how General Ratwatte, S.B. dissanayakel, Thilanga Sumathipala all had convenient medical problems that made them “beyond the reach of punishment in prison” even when they were not beyond the reach of the law. The latest in this sorry saga is Malaka Silva, the son of a notorious Minister, getting medical certificates from spineless and corrupt Drs.

The GMOA is very sensitive to any injustices inflicted on Drs. But when the Drs are openly colluding to pervert justice the GMOA seems quite content.
