DEW. G.
It is mind boggling why A person with such compassion is with a govt that is bent on a military solution which will never succeed. Sooner the Sinhala people and their leaders accept the reality that there can never be a single parliament for the two communities, sooner a solution can be reached. SWRD let out the monster Genie out of the bottle, no Sinhala leaders can put the Genie in the bottle again. It is that Genie who elect the leadrs to do its bidding. You and Austin are a tiny minority.

While it is agreed that July 1983 was a shameful chapter in our history, J.R.Jayewardene is also responsible for the present Constitution. A Constitution that encourages corruption. A Constitution that encourages impunity. A Constitution that gave himself and those who followed him blanket immunities. A Constitution that has undermined other branches of Government, particularly the Legislature

The 17th Amendment to the Constitution was a deperate attempt by civil society to introduce some needed checks and balances which has also been sabotaged by unscrupulous politicians as a result of the provisions of this same Constitution.

Isn't it time that civil society mount a concerted campaign demanding that our representatives in Parliament - irrespective of political affiliations - take steps to ensure that at least the 17th Amendment to the Constitution is fully implemented in the public interest.

With kind regards.

Knowing DEW for long years and the humanitarian, devolutionist, and reformer of the State in him, I can vouch for the genuineness of sentiments he has expressed in his dairy notes. We suffer to date for the sins committed by those responsible and those provocative for such responses. The "satanization" of humans has continued to date. Hope DEW could genuinely be the catalyst to bring sanity to the current political scenario when people like Tissa Vitarana have failed miserably. Otherwise after another 25 years his diary will be repeated again with similar frustraing episodes. Let us have the freedom to die in a united country. Best wishes to you DEW.
