The President knows everything that is going on in our'Banana Republic!' Otherwise why do you think he put his brother as offence secretary?

The president is a captive of his own military beaurocracy and the armed forces, who are doing what they think is correct. This is a direct result of eulogising the armes forces continually from the time the war ended. The armed forces now think that they can do anything and noone can question them. The tamils unfortunately are the victims.
The president is not aware of what is happening in the periphery. Politicians who are awre are afraid of telling him the truth, as they are at the mercy of the armed forces and police for their own security.
Today the Human Rights Ministry has reportedly protested at how one of its officials was arrested by the police. Are they not aware that all citizens are thus arrested?

Thanks, Ruki, for your post and your courage to write about such basic concerns as the need for livelihood, protection and dignity, when the articles about and below yours, which attracted many times more comments, are about issues that barely touch on the lives of most Sri Lankans.
I was sad that Bailaman could only criticise you without being able to engage with the issue at hand. Unlike many posters to this website, you take the trouble to meet and support those you write about. It reminds me of a friend many years ago who returned from Batticaloa with harrowing stories of how the civilians were treated by both warring parties. His Colombo audience, without exception, when they heard of reports of Government atrocities, told him that he did not understand the situation and proceeded then to tell him 'what really was happening in Batticaloa.' Of course, they had never been to Batticaloa, probably have not been since and never intend to come here.
Thank you for writing what you did and thank you Groundviews for publishing it. I hope that the article prompts Bailaman and other sceptics to come and see for themselves and embrace the people of Kirimutti, Pullumalai and Savukady as Sri Lankans rather then treating them as debating points. I hope.

Bailaman,

I agree about everything requiring scrutiny but since the Lankan govt disappears reporters & civilians, impedes access to the Tamil IDP's, gives the boot to foreign journalists & NGO's ...

Ruki,

In a day and age where everything requires scrutiny, I wish you backed your claims with something more substantial than "Several of these people told me.."

Your above post is being used by Mathew Russell Lee of Inner City Press in the link below with the words "ethnic cleansing"..

See link below:

Reading your post above I understand your concern for the displaced, but fail to see a balanced article. Is it safe to then say your are not very fond of the current administration? If so, the article needs to be scrutinised even further as it isn't an unbiased view.
