Security forces stop issue travel permit to leave jaffna for the security of SAARC conference. Normally if anybody wish to leave Jaffna they must be taken permission from the forces. The security forces stop issue travel permit to end of this month, the reason of SAARC conference security. They issue travel permit only urgent cases like funneral, treatment, wedding and interview.

Buying Onions From India & China

Jaffna onion cultivators are unable to market their produce, but it is sad that Sri Lanka imports onions from India and China.
In Colombo onions are selling for Rs110 per kg. But in Jaffna onions sell at Rs30.00 per kg. One month ago Jaffna onion cultivators sold their produce at Rs7.00 per kg by going house to house on bicycles and land master small tractors.

Questionnaire And Licenses In Jaffna

President Mahinda is checking the Jaffna peoples’ pulse. Now security forces take census in Jaffna. They collect all the informations Address, ID No, educational qualifications, designation, phone No, mobile No, Bicycle, motorbike No, everything from each family members. The last question soldiers asked each house, future election you will support to whom?
Separately, sometimes security forces are doing local administration works also. Jaffna town Commander ordered all the bicycle holders should take bicycle licences before 10th of this month. If anyone ride bicycles without, the bicycles to be taken by forces. All the bicycle holders hurry to take the licences. One pradeshiya saba clerk said he issued more than 150 bicycle licence daily, some times he can’t control the crowd.

Special Military ID For Jaffna

Security forces are issuing a Special Military ID again in Jaffna. After 1996 when the troops captured Jaffna the forces issued a special ID for Jaffna people. After the CFA they stopped this identity card issue.

Now they started again issuing the special ID.

On 24th evening security forces announced in Jaffna town area by a three wheeler that those who completed 10 years, they must be take this ID.

Stanley Rd Closure Affects Traders In Jaffna

Traders on Jaffna Stanley Road are badly affected by the closure of the road. The road is closed for public usage for security reasons and only pedestrians are allowed to use it. Even bicyles are not allowed by forces.

Two major offices are situated on the road. One is the EPDP Jaffna office. The other is the 512 brigade (town commanders office). But otherwise, there are hardware shops, motor spare parts shops, paint shops, motor bike show rooms etc. Officials at the Chamber of Commerce in Jaffna said more than 200 shops lost their business. Mobile phones are of no use now in Jaffna. The purpose of using mobile phones is to pass on any urgent message, but mobile phone connections are being cut often in Jaffna.

Generally for more than half the day, connections are out. More than one lakh mobile phone users are there in Jaffna.

Robberies Increase In Jaffna

Gun-point robberies have increased in Jaffna. Town area houses are robbed day or night and even during curfew time. Last week some robbers went to a house during the day, introduced themselves as being from the CID dept and said they wanted to search the house. After they left a camera, money and a mobile phone were missing.

Day before yesterday some robbers went to a restaurant and robbed at gun point. Sometimes the robbers sexually harass women as well.

One month back some robbers robbed a house in Kalvianakadu. The house owner shouted thief and neighbours gathered and chased them away and caught one of them. The villagers assaulted the robber and he died as a result.

Prices Improve In Jaffna

Jaffna people are a little happy now. All the essential item prices are down a little bit and things are available at pavement shops. Still the prices are double or triple the market price but reduced two to three times from the January market price. Whats not easily bought are medicine and baby items.

Rice reduced from Rs170.00 to Rs70.00, soap Rs150.00 to Rs50.00, shampoo Rs35.00 to Rs5.00, matches box Rs30.00 to Rs5.00, cocunut oil Rs 1200.00 to Rs300.00. Kerosene is buffer stock.

But baby items are still in shortage.

Students Missing In Jaffna

Two students are missing in Vadamaradchi. P.Yaseetharan and K.Sivaruban, who are Uduppidy American Mission students, are missing since Sunday afternoon. Their parents have made a complaint at the Human Rights Commission Jaffna branch. Both of them went to private tuition by motorbike and so far they didn’t come back to their homes, their parents said.
The information available is that 584 persons went missing in Jaffna last year. 158 persons under the security forces custody. There is no information about the other 416 persons. So far 62 people have surrendered at the Human Rights Commission Jaffna branch due to death threats.
